1. What are wood-look tiles?

Wood-look tiles (also known as faux wood tiles) are essentially ceramic or porcelain tiles fired at high temperatures, combined with 5D printing technology to make the grain patterns, colors, and surface texture almost identical to natural wood.

Wood-look tiles have been and continue to be a leading trend in interior finishing materials, trusted by both retail customers and designers for a variety of residential and commercial projects.

Due to the increasing demand for wood-look flooring materials, in addition to the two popular types—hardwood floors and wood-look tiles—wood-look vinyl flooring has also appeared on the market, making many customers confused about which to choose.

2. Why choose wood-look tiles?

Experience shows that tiles are more durable than hardwood or vinyl flooring because they are less affected by factors such as weather, moisture, chemicals, and abrasion. Moreover, the surface of wood-look tiles reaches an R10 rating, providing excellent slip resistance. Therefore, using wood-look tiles is a smart choice.

2.1. High durability and scratch resistance

As mentioned above, wood-look tiles inherently feature a porcelain body, offering very high hardness and a water absorption rate of <0.5%, ensuring long-term waterproofing even in high-traffic areas or spaces frequently exposed to water. 2.2. Slip resistance

5D printing technology provides a level of randomness and grain detail comparable to real wood. Combined with diverse surface finishes—whether polished, matt, or structured—they offer excellent slip resistance and are suitable for both flooring and wall tiling.

2.3. Easy installation

Wood-look tiles typically come in plank formats such as 150×900 mm, 200×1000 mm, or sizes like 600×600 mm, 600×1200 mm with pre-designed herringbone patterns, making them easy to install. The tile surface is easy to clean thanks to Class A stain-resistant technology, making it ideal for both high-traffic areas like living rooms and hallways, and damp areas like bathrooms, kitchens, and balconies…

2.4. Comparison with laminate flooring and luxury vinyl tile (LVT)

Laminate flooring usually features a multi-layer pressed structure, with an inner core typically made of melamine resin and fiberboard materials, topped with a wood-grain design layer that mimics real wood. Laminate flooring has moderate durability, with lower load-bearing capacity and water resistance compared to wood-look tiles.

As for vinyl flooring (LVT/SPC), it is made from PVC, SPC, or WPC plastic, with a wood-grain film layer and a wear layer on top. It features interlocking joints for easy installation, feels warm underfoot, and is affordable.

However, its water resistance, load capacity, and overall durability are relatively low. If the subfloor is not properly prepared, it may produce unpleasant creaking sounds when walked on and requires frequent maintenance or replacement over time.

Regarding natural wood flooring

In reality, natural hardwood flooring is always favored by customers for the authentic and warm feel it provides, but its cost is quite high and maintenance is demanding, so most consumers still opt for laminate flooring when thinking of wood.
However, the biggest drawback of laminate flooring is its durability; it is easily affected by external elements such as humidity, chemicals, or physical impacts like drops, scratches, and embers…

Tests show that wood-look floor tiles have better heat and scratch resistance than laminate flooring.

Combining the natural wood appearance with superior advantages over laminate and vinyl flooring—such as scratch resistance, waterproofing, load-bearing strength, chemical resistance, colorfastness, and zero maintenance needed over time—wood-look floor tiles have become the top choice for home renovation. Furthermore, wood-look tiles are relatively more affordable, more sustainable, and easier to maintain than natural wood.

3. Sizes

Most wood-look tiles are manufactured in rectangular plank sizes such as 150×900, 200×1000, and 200×1200 mm to provide the most realistic simulation of natural wood floors. However, to meet customer demands, wood-look tiles are also available in square formats like 600×600 and 800×800 mm, similar to other floor tiles.

For hundreds of years, natural wood planks have been a favored choice for homeowners who love their rustic, warm appeal. However, as people become more conscious of environmental and forest protection, many are hesitant to use natural timber due to its lack of eco-friendliness, high cost, and susceptibility to scratches and staining.

6. How to choose beautiful wood-look floor tiles

Wood-look tiles come in a diverse range of colors, patterns, and dimensions. Therefore, before making a choice, you should consider key factors such as the tile body type (ceramic or porcelain), dimensions (planks to square tiles), surface finish (polished or matt), and surface design (how many faces/patterns for a natural look)…

Here are 3 important criteria that every customer should keep in mind when selecting wood-look tiles for tiling:

6.1. Choose wood-look tiles according to the space

For the living room, prioritize long plank tiles such as 15×90 cm or 20×100 cm with multiple random patterns to create an authentic, luxurious feel just like real wood.

You can consider using grey-white or black wood-look floor tiles for contemporary spaces, and light brown wood tiles for rustic aesthetics such as Japandi, Wabi-Sabi, Retro…

In addition, pay attention to surface texture: wood-look floor tiles should have a moderate texture to prevent slipping without feeling uncomfortable under bare feet.

6.3. Choose porcelain body wood tiles

Currently, wood-look tiles are available in two main body types: ceramic and porcelain. Porcelain wood tiles are further divided into standard porcelain and full-body porcelain, with full-body porcelain being the most reliable choice for flooring.

Because porcelain wood tiles have higher density and hardness than conventional ceramic tiles, they are virtually waterproof and stain-resistant. Furthermore, porcelain wood tiles feature precisely rectified edges, allowing for thinner and more uniform grout lines than ceramic tiles.
