1. What is Terrazzo Tile?
1.1. Definition
“Terra” in Latin means earth. Traditional Terrazzo flooring material, also known as polished concrete/granito flooring, is an artisanal composite product made from a blend of concrete and leftover stone chips from natural stone quarrying.

Terrazzo tile collection
The disadvantage of traditional cast-in-place terrazzo floors is that when installed over large areas, surface cracking can easily occur after a period of use, affecting both structural quality and aesthetics. Therefore, people started opting for individual tile panels to resolve this issue, which became the predecessor of modern Terrazzo tiles.

Today, modern manufacturing technology has advanced poured terrazzo into Porcelain Terrazzo tiles in standard sizes (30×60, 60×60, 80×80, 60x120cm) that are easy to install, 9-11mm thick with excellent load-bearing capacity (20 – 35 N/mm²), waterproof, and capable of eliminating surface cracking issues over prolonged use.

1.2. Characteristics
Traditional Terrazzo floor tiles include 2 surface types: rough (unpolished) and smooth (polished), which help prevent moss growth and provide great slip resistance. Suitable for outdoor garden projects and sidewalks.
Hydraulic pressing in the Terrazzo tile production process delivers high load-bearing capacity, minimizing cracking or breakage under heavy vehicle loads, making them ideal for parking lots, parks, hospitals, or schools with high foot traffic.

2. Applications
Previously, classic 400×400 and 300×300 Terrazzo tile models often featured a thick cement body and an anti-slip textured surface, mainly used for outdoor applications like garden paving, school yards, sidewalks, or parking areas…

4.2. Production Process
Mixing raw materials: All raw materials are loaded into an automatic mixer; once thoroughly blended, the mixture is transferred to pressing molds.
Terrazzo tile pressing machine: Utilizing hydraulic pressing technology to exert massive pressure, ensuring uniform, stable, high-quality tiles with outstanding load-bearing and thermal resistance.

Terrazzo tile production process
The tile surface is sprayed with a speckled granite layer to complete the manufacturing line. A grinding machine polishes the surface smooth (for polished finish varieties).
Finally, the tiles are boxed, typically 6 pieces per box.
4.3. Standards
Terrazzo Tile Standard 7744:2013: This standard specifies technical requirements for terrazzo tiles used in interior and exterior tiling. Modern terrazzo tiles must also meet strict criteria for hardness, low water absorption, low abrasion, precise dimensions, and superior aesthetic surface quality.

5. How to Install Terrazzo Tiles
Step 1: Clean and level the subfloor surface.
Step 2: Spread a sand bedding layer to increase contact surface when laying tiles.
Step 3: Apply diluted cement slurry over the leveled sand bed to improve bonding with tiles.

7. Frequently Asked Questions about Terrazzo Tiles
-
Do these tiles absorb water or crack like traditional poured terrazzo?
No. Traditional terrazzo is cast from cement, making it porous, prone to cracking, and prone to water absorption (at 5-10%). In contrast, KHATRA Terrazzo is Porcelain tile with extremely low water absorption. Its surface is coated with a specialized protective glaze that resists stains from everyday spills like tea, coffee, or cleaning chemicals, requiring no periodic sealing unlike traditional terrazzo.
-
What sizes are available for Terrazzo tiles?
Standard Terrazzo floor tile sizes are 600×600, 800×800, and 600x1200mm. Wall tile sizes typically include 300x600mm, while large-format slabs come in 1200×1200, 750×1500, and 1200x2400mm.
-
Should terrazzo tiles be used for bathrooms or outdoor spaces?
Terrazzo tiles are perfectly suited for wet areas like bathrooms or outdoor settings thanks to their waterproof nature and international slip-resistance ratings of R10 to R11, ensuring absolute safety for bathroom floors, covered patios, or pool surrounds.
-
What is the current price range for Terrazzo-look Porcelain tiles?
Tile prices typically vary by size: 600×600 terrazzo ranges around 250,000 – 350,000 VND/m2, while 800×800, 600×1200, and large format slabs start from 450,000 VND/m2.
